Dr. Packard's career in orthodontics and dentistry spanned thirty-seven years. He received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Oregon Dental School in 1963. Then in 1967 he completed his MS degree in orthodontics from Loma Linda University where he graduated first in his class.
He practiced in Idaho for sixteen years before coming to Texas in 1983 where he established The Orthodontic Place. Dr. Packard ran offices in Plano and Richardson until 1997 when the business became known as Apple Orthodontix. Expansion had already begun. In 1993, the Carrollton office was opened, followed by Mesquite, Irving, N. Richland Hills, Bedford and Ft. Worth. Offices in Coppell, Denton, The Colony, McKinney, W. Plano, Arlington, Cedar Hill, Frisco and Rockwall opened in the next eight years. Additional offices across the D/FW metroplex are in the planning stages.
Professional memberships include the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association and Dallas County Dental Society.
Dr. Packard has been deeply involved in service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served for three years as the Bishop of the Plano Stake and nine years as the Stake President in Plano and McKinney. He is currently a Counselor in the Mission Presidency of the Texas, Dallas Mission of LDS. A past scoutmaster and long time benefactor of the Boy Scouts of America, Dr. Packard was recently honored with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award.
Dr. Packard and his wife, Talmadge, raised eleven children, including Chad Packard, CEO of Apple Orthodontix. They have forty-six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Summing up his extensive career in orthodontics, Dr. Packard says, "I have thoroughly enjoyed my career as an orthodontist. It has given me the opportunity to work with wonderful people, my fellow staff members, as well as my patients. Being able to give people something to smile about has been very rewarding indeed."
